Deadlines

MUSIC MAGAZINE – COURSEWORK PORTFOLIO

What you need to do:

Research –By 16th January. Include:
• Annotation of front covers(3),
• Contents pages(3)
• Detailed case study on a music magazine you have purchased and read thoroughly. Use the following headings:
o Background and ownership.( eg. IPC website looked at in class)
o Content and approach to music. (What genre of music are they aiming at? What is the reader profile? What is the style of the magazine?
o Editorial content: comment from the magazine editor/owner and reader interaction.
o Analysis of double page spreads – to include layout and language (3)
o Promoting the industry and other products.(What else do they offer/advertise? (Eg Kerrang with its convergence of many media opportunities)

You should complete your blog with an analysis of what you think the future for music magazines and print publishing in general is(the industry is in a lot of trouble due to the credit crunch and the increasing availability of digital technologies and on line content).
Look back at the Kerrang and SmashHits articles given out in class and any other recent articles you have found on the internet or print about the music industry..

2. Planning of product – During Christmas hols.> Deadline 30th January
Flat plans, sketches/mock-ups(min. x 2), photo shoots, interviews, writing copy. You should also create a Reader profile for your magazine, questionnaire or focus group feedback on initial ideas for cover, colours, fonts, title, contents.
Practise on Photoshop (Remember Tuesday sessions in CR2 after school)

Make use of the holidays and daylight to set up photo shoots and get your initial ideas for copy written.

3. Magazine Construction- Deadline 13th February
• Layout of magazine in Photoshop,(Minimum of 4 original images per candidate) – Front cover, contents page and double page spread from each student. Remember all images in your magazine must be original – produced by you or your group.
• Audience feedback of your product
• Completion of evaluation questions.

You will have January and the first half of February to complete your work in class.

CHECKLIST - MUSIC MAGAZINE – COURSEWORK PORTFOLIO

Research –By 16th January (Tick number when complete)
Using 3 music magazines or your choice


1. Annotation/Deconstruction of front covers of 3 music magazines.
2. Annotation/deconstruction of at least 3 contents pages of music magazines.
3. Notes on blog about background to magazine, how long it has been produced and who owns it. (eg IPC website)
4. Notes on content and approach to music. (What genre of music? Who reads it- reader profile? What is the style of the magazine?)
5. Notes/bullet points on reader interaction. Is there a letters page? Email? Readers’ polls?
6. Analysis of double page spreads (1 for each magazine or 3 from one magazine – 3 in total) – Layout, content and language.
7. How else does the magazine promote the music industry? What else to they offer or advertise? Eg radio, website….
8. Read Kerrang and Smashed Hits articles about music magazines and write a final research comment on what you think the future of the music magazine industry is. Will people still be able to afford music magazines? Will they read them on line?.......

9. Organisation of photo shoot(s) to include camera, actors, costumes, props, location, lighting (take more photos than you need).
